The DO's and DON'Ts of IT

Here is a little advice for all those who are a little "IT Challenged."
Please don't follow too closely, or I won't have anything to blog.

  • Computers are switched on with the power button, just like every other appliance.
  • YES Computers DO need electricity to run. Just like your TV.
  • The monitor is NOT the computer, it is the monitor. The computer is infact the computer!
  • DO NOT Ignore error messages. "It flashed up an error that said it was broken" is NOT an acceptable error message!
  • NO Microsoft Office is NOT the same as Microsoft Windows. They are two very different pieces of software.
  • DO NOT Install half a dozen Anti-Virus programs on the same computer. It will NOT protect you more against viruses, just slow your PC down.
  • DO NOT keep asking how long something will take to fix, it does NOT speed up the process.
  • DO NOT use CD-ROM Trays as drinks coasters.
  • DO NOT use your Monitor as a notice board.
  • DO NOT answer "a black one" when asked what type of computer you have.
  • DO NOT call the Photographs on your computers background "Screensavers." They are called "Wallpapers" and always have been.
  • The mouse is to be used on a flat surface, either the table or on a mouse pad. NOT on the screen itself.
  • DO NOT ask what the solution to a problem was when you are only going to say "Whoa there, I am not a computer expert" after it has been explained. Thats why you brought it to us in the first place.
  • Saying that you "Know Nothing" about computers will NOT get you sympathy, it just bores us.
  • The Recycle Bin is NOT a storage area for your personal files. We are NOT to blame if you loose work when it is emptied.
  • If you are asking the impossible, arguing with us will not help. Just remember, you called us!
  • Just because there is another ongoing problem, this does NOT mean that it is the cause of every other problem.

More to follow...
